How to clean a garbage disposal

Most of us can’t imagine home without a waste disposer machine. But owning one can quickly turn into a nightmare if you don’t know how to maintain and clean it properly. It’s a well known fact that food leftovers can produce bad odor. Of course garbage disposal unit is here to grind all the food leftovers and makes them instantly disappear from the kitchen. However if you don’t clean your disposal unit properly, food scraps will accumulate inside and eventually start producing a bad odor.

You should always remember that prevention is better than cure. Here are a couple of our tips on how to clean your waste disposal machine properly and correctly.

If there’s already unpleasant odor coming from your machine, it will be a little harder to get rid of it. You can always try to clean it by running water and the engine together for a couple of minutes. If that doesn’t help, add a little bit of soap so the dirt can get out more easily. If you don’t want to use soap, you can also use these things:


Vinegar is a strong acid that can be found in almost every kitchen. Pour a few cups of vinegar into your disposal machine, wait for a couple of minutes and then turn on the disposal machine for a couple of minutes, and let the vinegar do the magic.

Baking soda

Baking soda can be used for variety of household tasks, including cleaning disposal machines. You can also mix baking soda with vinegar for a better effect.


Although lemon acid isn’t as strong as vinegar, it can help you getting rid of unpleasant odor from your disposal machine. Squeeze it  into the garbage disposal, wait for a couple of minutes, and acid will do the magic.

If you can’t get rid of the unpleasant odor coming out of your disposal machine, then there’s no other way than to open it an clean it from the inside.
